This resulted in a grand hotel called Midland Grand Hotel.
It all started in 1865 when the Midland Railway Company decided to step into the hotels industry.
Called a Gothic treasure that was too beautiful and too romantic to survive in world of concrete and block towers by Sir John Betjeman, St. Pancras’s survival is quite amazing.
A competition was held for 150-bed hotel and even though the building had 300 beds, George Gilbert Scott’s design won.
Every room had a fire place, there was gold leaf on the walls, revolving doors, concrete floors, innovative hydraulic lifts and an incredible grand staircase.
It opened in 1873 and was closed in 1935. The building had become too outdated to carry out the operations of a hotel by the 1930s. The building included apartments known as St. Pancras Chambers and were used as railway offices between 1935 and 1980s.
It reopened in 2011 with 244 bedrooms, two bars, two restaurants, ball room, 20 meeting rooms and a leisure center. A lot of time, money and resources were involved to restore the building back to its former magnificence. Now after years of dedicated restoration, Midland Grand Hotel was renamed as St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel.
It is popularly called as most romantic building of London. Its hand-stenciled wall art and designs, Gothic revival metalwork, gold leaf ceilings and the grand staircase are as glamorous and beautiful as they were in 1873. It is set in St. Pancras international railway station, thus the name.
This luxury hotel a detailed and intricate Gothic Revival style building that is located at the distance of 1.7 from National Portrait Gallery and 1 mile from the British Museum. The rooms have been done by beautifully blending the original features with contemporary furnishings.
The plush rooms happen to have Wi-Fi, flat screen TVS and coffeemakers. Some of the upgraded rooms have the access to club lounge that provides complimentary afternoon tea and breakfast. St. Pancras Renaissance also possesses a chic spa, fitness center, indoor pool and event space as well. The two restaurants provide quite an assortment to suit your taste buds.
