Called a Gothic treasure that was too beautiful and too romantic to survive in world of concrete and block towers by Sir John Betjeman, St. Pancras’s survival is quite amazing. A competition was held for 150-bed hotel and even though the building had 300 beds, George Gilbert Scott’s design won. Every room had a fire place, there was gold leaf on the walls, revolving doors, concrete floors, innovative hydraulic lifts and an incredible grand staircase. It opened in 1873 and was closed in 1935. The building had become too outdated to carry out the operations of a hotel by the 1930s. The building included apartments known as St. Pancras Chambers and were used as railway offices between 1935 and 1980s.
